Sharmain joined HACCT in July 2017. My career background is as an experienced children services senior manager and leader with a career focus deeply embedded in the management, delivery and improvement of children’s safeguarding social work services, achieving positive outcomes for service users. I am flexible and adopt a hands-on approach, confidently working at operational or strategic level in organisations.
I qualified as social worker in 1994 and progressed through middle and senior management posts giving me an insight, expertise and understanding of Children’s Safeguarding and corporate parenting at all levels. I am also a qualified life coach and am currently a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council and Association for Coaching.
I have a strong belief in the concept of working with people within their own communities to promote positive change thereby making a difference in the lives of children and young people and families.
I have previously been involved with Huddersfield Carnival both as a participant, band leader and committee member. Carnival is part of the African Caribbean and wider community in Huddersfield’s richly diverse heritage. Whilst I have hung up my dancing boots in terms of being a masquerader I am keen to see the carnival continue as a “family friendly” cultural event under the umbrella of Huddersfield African Caribbean Cultural Trust (HACCT) and would also like to see HACCT to broaden its vision and remit as a community organisation that becomes an inspirer and champion of all aspects of community participation such as supporting health, education, an social issues.
